The NOTO Art Center is excited to announce a new Resident Artist opportunity aimed at supporting emerging artists in their creative journeys while fostering a vibrant arts community. This program is designed to provide selected artists with the resources, space, and support needed to develop their artistic practice and launch their art careers and businesses.
The Resident Artist Program will grant one emerging artist a year-long residency that includes:
- Private Studio Space: A dedicated studio space to create and develop a body of work, providing the artist with a conducive environment for artistic exploration.
- Amenities: Unlimited access to the Avant Gard Underground common space, which includes facilities for collaboration, networking, and community engagement.
- Classroom Access: Eight hours per month of classroom space for workshops, classes, or community events that the artist may wish to host.

- Digital Portfolio: A collection of recent works that demonstrate the artist’s style, techniques, and range.
- Artist Bio: A brief biography outlining the artist’s background, education, and artistic journey.
- Artist Statement: A statement that conveys the artist’s vision, themes, and the mediums they work with.
- 500-Word Essay: An essay detailing how the residency will help launch the artist’s career and business, including specific goals for their artistic and entrepreneurial aspirations.
- References: Provide 2 personal references and one professional reference at time of application:
To be eligible,
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
- Applicants must be members of Friends of NOTO at the time of the award and throughout the term of the residency.
- Selected artists will be required to sign the NOTO lease and all associated paperwork, including the code of conduct.
Entries will be reviewed and selected by the NOTO Arts Committee and approved by NOTO staff. The selection process will focus on the artist’s potential for growth, the quality of their work, and how they plan to utilize the resources provided by the residency.
In return for the studio space and amenities, the awardee will be expected to:
- Provide no less than 32 hours of volunteer work at the NOTO Art Center each month, contributing to the center’s operations and community initiatives.
- Create a cohesive body of work during their residency, which will culminate in an exhibition at the NOTO Art Center.
- Submit a 500-word essay at the end of the residency reflecting on their experience and the impact it had on their artistic career.
The NOTO Art Center believes that this Resident Artist opportunity will not only support individual artists in their creative pursuits but also enrich the local arts community by fostering collaboration, education, and engagement.
