Battle Buddy Bulletin: Edition 1

August 2025

Mission Pawsible

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Paws Tales! Hopefully, you will enjoy reading about all of the great things happening at Healing Paws for Warriors, plus see our upcoming events where we will need volunteer assistance. We always need volunteers! A big Thank You goes out to Sam Hay and Chris Krebs for getting this newsletter started. I believe you will enjoy their creativity throughout the publication.

We have had a busy 13 months..."4.5” classes and 18 graduates! We are very proud of our program and we are grateful to our sponsors and donors who make this dream of "Saving lives at both ends of the Leash" a reality. We simply cannot do it without you! Our next class (Class #24) begins in late August and we currently have openings for qualified veterans. The cut-off is 8 August for applying. Please Note - Veterans did not have to serve in combat or be on active duty at the time the trauma of PTSD, MST, or TBI occurred. It may have occurred after separation/retirement from active duty. For example, you were in the civilian workforce and something happened that created one of the traumas. You are eligible!

Please call us if you have any questions. Our applications are located on our website, www.healingpawsforwarriors.org. Sign up soon to secure your spot for Class #24 and feel the "magic" of what a service dog can do for you. Ask any of our graduates...we set you up for success!

 Golfing for Good:

KOC's 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament

A huge thank you to St. Rita's Knights of Columbus Council 17689 Santa Rosa Beach for hosting their annual golf tournament to benefit 3 outstanding local charities, including Healing Paws for Warriors! This is the second year they have done this for the community. It was a beautiful day and the golfers were all smiles. Several of our vet teams were on hand to meet the golfers and our volunteers helped man the info/merchandise tent.

Barbers for Battle Buddies

Thank you to Keith Gorham and Derrick Asher with The Gryms Men Barbershop for helping us “Save lives at both ends of the Leash!”  You do great work, not just cutting hair, but serving your community!

Thank you to the Holley Navarre-Elks Lodge 2787 for your very generous contribution, supporting our mission of Saving Lives at both ends of the leash! Your donation will be used to purchase K-9 supplies for our upcoming class. We cannot do what we do without community support.

Hands-On Training with Nurses at NWFSC

We had a great experience of training with some nursing students and their instructors at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville.  Some of our current students and graduates participated in hospital orientation to better acquaint themselves with the sights, sounds, and smells of a hospital room scenario with their "battle buddies."

Our K-9s readily joined their veterans in the hospital bed for comfort. Training also addressed procedures for taking blood pressure and checking heart rates...mainly acclimating the dogs to the equipment before it is used on the patient (veteran). We also briefly touched on the subject of night terrors and how the dogs should react.

This was actually two-fold training as the student nurses, as well as some of the instructors learned how to navigate with a service dog present.

Many thanks to Dr. Cook, the instructor staff, nursing students, and NWFSC for setting up and allowing us to participate in this training!

Training Corner

Thanks to Beast Code, Lumber Liquidators, Cox Communications, Winn Dixie, the Pet Supermarket in Uptown Station, Office Depot, Lowes, TJ Maxx, the Air Force Armament Museum and many more places, for allowing us to train our pups!

Public access and community integration is key to training our Vet Teams. Thanks to our dedicated graduate mentors for always being there and providing practical experience and advice to our new students. Our training is always professional, but we also have fun doing it. A "Pawsitive" training experience is the most memorable!

The Paws Perspective

Q&A: An interview with one of Healing Paws' K-9 heroes.

1. What is your name?

Jack or Jackie

2. What is your breed?

Australian Kelpie

3. What is your age?

2 years old

4. Who is your veteran and when were you first partnered together?

My Veteran is Matt, we were paired together in January 2025, and we graduated in April 2025.

5. What are some of your favorite activities when you're not working?

Running in the backyard, wrestling on the floor and sleeping in the bed.

6. What are your favorite treats and toys?

Sting Ray stuffy,  Starbucks Pup Cups

7. What are some ways in which you help your veteran?

I guide my veteran quickly out of crowds, stand guard when his back is turned, calm him when he is feeling overwhelmed, and bark/alert him when I sense my veteran needs a break.

8. What are some ways in which you help your family?

We enjoy going to soccer tournaments together and now dad can enjoy the games and the family instead of feeling overwhelmed by the crowds.

9. What was a favorite vacation?

I went to Disney World this summer and met the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda (Grogu); he's cute, but personally, I think I'm cuter! This was the first Disney vacation my family was able to enjoy without the added stress of the crowds and overstimulation. We had so much fun.
