May News from SCF

Proven Results.  A Powerful Future.

We’re thrilled to share that our data-backed programs are making a measurable difference in the lives of students. With over 80% of participants showing academic growth and improved confidence, the outcomes (see below!) speak for themselves.

This upcoming school year, we’re excited to bring our proven approach to LAUSD, expanding our impact where it’s needed most. Right now, we’re working with middle school students who cannot read. We are righting that wrong through strong mentorship and confidence-building instruction that empowers each child to believe in their potential and build foundational skills for success.

But we can’t do it alone. Your support is essential to ensure more students receive the high-quality, high-impact instruction they deserve.

Together, let’s continue turning data into opportunity — and outcomes into lifelong change.

Best Wishes,

Cassandra Petersen Harris

Executive Director

SCF Spring Tutoring Program Updates

We are on track to impact the lives of 110 students during our Spring 2025 tutoring cycles in school sites in Southeast Los Angeles.

And our results match what the experts say:  high-dose tutoring works!

Overall, our program significantly increases test scores for over 80% of the students we tutor in a nine-week cycle.

And 100% of the school staff we work with would recommend SCF and our program to other schools!

We are so proud of our results and our reputation with the schools and staff we have worked with so far.  SCF is excited to expand our reach into Los Angeles Unified School District this coming school year!

A Call To Action

According to the National Student Support Accelerator at Stanford University, "the need for high-impact tutoring continues" even five years after the height of Covid-19.  We are at a critical moment - we cannot stop our work that helps students catch up from the devastating effects of learning loss from the pandemic.

The students of Los Angeles continue to face incredible difficulties - it's true that school budgets shrink every year, but this year, significant federal funding has suddenly been put on hold.  Add on top of that the effects of the Los Angeles fires earlier this year, and Los Angeles schools are fighting for their students on many fronts.

Image of quote: Federal relief funding that allowed districts to try new things has run out. And yet the evidence has never been clearer: High-dosage tutoring works and can help millions of students.

But one of the things that makes Southeast Community Foundation different from other tutoring providers is that we offer our programs free of charge to families.  One of our core beliefs is that students from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to achieve their goals.

But the good news is that this is possible because of support from friends like you.  Please consider a recurring donation to SCF - just $2 a day can help get our services to the students who need us the most!

Every May, the US celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week.  Teachers deserve so much for everything they do for students, families, and our communities.

From all of us at SCF, to all of our SCF tutors and teachers, and to all teachers everywhere, thank you for the incredible work you do every single day.
