Results released in January from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress national exams show a sobering picture of education in the US: 40% of fourth graders and 33% of eighth graders scored "below basic" in reading skills. The assessments show that student learning continues to decline in reading and is not progressing enough in math to make up for learning losses since the Covid-19 pandemic. And while the declines are across all races and classes, they hit traditionally underserved sectors the hardest as those students continue to fall further behind.
“Our lowest performing students are reading at historically low levels,” said Peggy Carr, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, which gives the NAEP exam. “We need to stay focused in order to right this ship.”
