Dear Family and Friends,

Every day, I am thankful to all of you for your time, talents, and treasures. You are part of a family, caring for other family members who need help. It is my pleasure to send you this newsletter and keep you updated on the things happening here at the Kitchen.

Since July 1, 2024 (8 months), we have served 81,692 meals. That's 21% more than last year! Additionally, there were 3,468 households who visited the pantry, which is more than double last year.

Comings and Goings

  • We welcome John McDermott to the team. He will handling deliveries and working the door during the lunch hour. He is replacing Eugene Valla who is no longer with us.
  • This past fall, we lost a dear member of our St. Peter’s Kitchen family. Rick Scheffer, a longtime volunteer cook, brought joy and positivity to everyone around him. His upbeat spirit and generosity in the kitchen will be deeply missed.
  • We’ve been blessed to welcome many new individual volunteers over the past few months and are looking forward to the return of our snow-birds! If you’re interested in joining our dedicated volunteers, we always have a place for you, no matter your skills or availability. Please reach out via our volunteer form if interested.

Mayonnaise & Grape Jelly

We are very blessed to be able to source a lot of food, but we struggle to obtain mayonnaise and grape jelly for the pantry and lunch program. A mayo and jelly drive is a good way to teach our youth about volunteering, and we would be happy to provide marketing and logistical support. Recently, two young people did just that, conducting drives to help fill the need.

Cooking hint – you can stretch what mayo you have by adding yogurt!

Improving Our Space

Abby Lambier, a Venture Scout, painted our pantry and conference room to make it more welcoming as her Summit Project, which leads to the Summit Rank – the highest rank in Venture Scouting!

Benni Rinaudo, a Saturday Volunteer, has started his Eagle Scout Project which includes painting our offices and trim on our windows. More pictures will follow in the next update!

On the morning of March 17, 2025, our 26 year-old water heater gave up! The best thing to come out of it was the amazing resilience of our team, Char Cordone and Ann Windes. They immediately rearranged the menu and brought in additional volunteers that produced a cold lunch and it went off without a hitch! Thank you to all who responded. And yes, we had a new, more efficient water heater installed by the 4:45PM the same day!

Golf Tournament Date Announced!

Our Annual Golf Tournament is Friday, September 5, 2025 at Eagle Vale Golf Club. Paul and Linda Forte will be chairing the event and we need additional help! Please reach out to me at bob@stpeterskitchen.org to get involved.

Eggflation

The price of eggs has more than doubled since the summer of 2023, and it has been over $5 dollars a dozen in recent days. Historically eggs have been a low cost source of protein, especially with the elderly and low income households. Many people today are unable to afford eggs any longer. We have received a grant to enable us to purchase NYS Eggs from small producers, but have been unable to find one to work with. We are optimistic that supply will go up, but are seeking help from our community if they know any egg producers, to please send them our way.

Planned Giving and IRA Distribution

Did you know that if you’re 73 or older, you’re required to take minimum distributions from your retirement accounts each year? Instead of increasing your taxable income, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to St. Peter’s Kitchen. By donating directly from your IRA, you can support our mission of providing meals, resources, and dignity to those in need—while also reducing your taxable income. Talk to your financial advisor about making a tax-smart gift this tax season!

Worry in our World

Finally, I'd like to leave you with a poem that inspires me to do what I can every single day. I hope to see you soon in the Kitchen.

Worry is Not Work

Worrying feels like work.

It isn't.

Worrying feels like it matters.

It doesn't.

Worry does not improve the lives of others.

Worry does not mend the cracks and fissures of a hurting world.

Worry does not feed… or clothe… or shelter… or provide hope.

Only actually working for a better world does those things.
