The new school year is coming up fast on August 16, and yesterday SLED got to share information about  new program funding with school principals - it was a good day!

This year SLED will be providing field trip transportation funding, piloting additional after school enrichment at 5 sites, and bringing Lawrence Hall of Science assemblies and festivals to all elementary and middle school sites.

Of course  we continue to fund our Mini-Grants, reclassification recognition, Removing Barriers, San Leandro History Museum field trips, the graduate parade, and the college workshop.  And there are always more ideas from teachers, too  and our programs committee are working on even more ideas for programs to introduce - this will be the most impactful year yet for SLED.

Summer internships are done, and more students than ever were able to learn, grow, and earn stipends with their work-based learning opportunities.

High school students got experience in the medical field at San Leandro Hospital with HEALS, got their hand dirty at Dig Deep Farms, learned the ins and outs of important trades at Eric F. Anderson, Doral's Auto Repair, and Cypress Mandela, and office-related jobs at Downtown San Leandro Community Benefit District, East Bay Mud, SL 2050, Shannon Leigh, and A & A Clothing.

Most participating students were paid stipends by the host company, SLED, and the district. All students reported an amazing summer of career exploration and learning.

Thanks to our incredible local business partner, Ghirardelli Chocolate, the internship opportunities for San Leandro students don't end in high school. Since 2012, Ghirardelli has parntered with SLED to host college-level summer interns at their San Leandro headquarters - and all are San Leandro High School graduates. This paid internship opportunity is exceptional - not only do the interns get complex, quality hands-on experience, but the team at Ghirardelli endeavor to include even more priceless information like interview skills, career guidance, and access to helpful resources.
