“Is my tutor here today?!”

“Can I have homework help today?!”

These are just a few of the enthusiastic questions our Volunteer Coordinator, Devan, heard on an almost daily basis from students in our Power Project Afterschool Program.

When kids ask for more academic work, you know something special is happening.

That “something special” is our extraordinary team of volunteer tutors—dedicated individuals who give their time week after week to help K–8 students from across Baltimore City tackle tough homework, build critical literacy skills, and receive the one-on-one attention every student deserves. We are endlessly grateful for their time, energy, and compassion.

Throughout the year, our students take regular diagnostic assessments that help us tailor tutoring sessions to their needs. From personalized worksheets to skill-building games, we ensure each student receives support that is both impactful and relevant—complementing what they are already learning in classrooms across more than 15 city schools.

During the last week of the program, our students made sure to express their gratitude with handmade thank-you cards, hugs, and keepsake photos for their tutors. 💛

The end of the Power Project and Igniter Internship is always a little bittersweet. But this year, we’re grateful to end on a high note—with students finally getting full use of our expanded building! They’ve already made themselves right at home—and that’s exactly how it should be.

We at SFNC strive to continue being a beacon of hope for our kids and our community—and we couldn’t be prouder of our students, who are shining brighter than ever.

What’s next?
