Two Health Professional PFAS  Education Tools!

Zoom Event: Unlocking Chemical Exposure from Fracking - Discussion for Medical Professionals. Wednesday, October 9 from 6-7PM CT.  As healthcare providers, you play a critical role in safeguarding the health of your patients and communities. But what happens when vital information about chemical exposures are hidden? This webinar, moderated by PSR Pennsylvania Board President Dr. Ned Ketyer, brings you to the front lines of a new effort to uncover threat from chemicals shielded as "confidential business information" and get you the chemical data from fracking operations—data that could directly affect the health of those you care for. Video CME: The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) would like to share an opportunity for free Video CME: Non-Stick Nuisance: Medical Monitoring for PFAS: Health Education & Guidance on PFAS Exposure.  The video is designed for CME credit, with no fee required, via Michigan State University (MSU), but it is also useful for non-physician clinicians and for community members. Less Than 30 Days to Get-Out-The-Vote!

How Health Professionals Can Make a Difference

There are many ways for health professionals to get involved in get-out-the-vote efforts! Below we are highlighting three great ways to take part in get out the vote efforts between now and election day.

Environmental Voter Project: Get involved by contacting voters who view the environment as their number one priority but don't have a strong history of turning out to vote.

  • You can make calls from your own home, send postcards, and if you are located in Austin, knock doors

Vote Forward: Write letters to voters

  • As a part of Vote Forward’s Social Campaigns, you can write nonpartisan letters to help increase voter turnout in key states from historically underrepresented communities

AHNE Celebrates Supreme Court Win

TxPSR Board Chair Adelita G. Cantu, PhD, RN announced a win for clean air and public health. On Oct. 4th the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the implementation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) Technology Review rule to proceed. This rule updates limits on hazardous air pollutant (also known as air toxics) emissions from power plants and requires more robust monitoring to ensure compliance. Dr. Cantu is a board member of the Alliance of Nurses for Health Environmental (ANHE) which helped to secure this important win!

Climate-Friendly Inhaler News

An Urgent Call to Bring an Affordable, Climate-Friendly Inhaler to the US

Greater Boston PSR board member Dr. Wynne Armand has written a piece to raise awareness about the need for the health care sector to reduce asthma inhaler emissions. We hope you'll agree she makes a good case for our need to address this issue in light of the climate crisis. Please read and share here!

Reflections from Climate Week 2024

Health professionals are seeing firsthand the impacts of the climate crisis and fossil fuel pollution on our patients—rising temperatures, worsening air quality, and increased disease. The urgency for change is clear. Transitioning to clean energy can protect our health and environment, offering cleaner air and safer water. Fossil fuel companies spend millions to obscure their pollution, but it’s our duty to advocate for a healthier future. This new video from The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health emphasizes that the time for action is now. Ending fossil fuels is a new beginning for health.

You can download and share this video on your own social media, or forward to colleagues. Example caption: Fossil fuel companies are spending millions to hide the harm they're causing. Meanwhile, we see the consequences firsthand in our patients. Let’s stand together for a healthier future powered by clean energy!
