Dear Jane,
As we approach the end of the year, we reflect on why Texas Physicians for Social Responsibility (Texas PSR) exists and why our work matters. We are driven by the belief that health professionals—whether seasoned practitioners or students—are uniquely positioned to educate the public and policy makers on how to combat climate change, address environmental toxins, and confront the growing threats posed by extreme heat.
Health professionals, because of their trusted roles and hands-on experience, witness firsthand how the environment impacts human health. They carry powerful stories that resonate with policymakers and communities alike.

Here’s what some of our dedicated board members have to say about why they do this work:
Adelita G Cantu, PhD, RN, FAAN. Professor, UT Health San Antonio "As a nurse, I act as a role model for environmental sustainability and educate the community on the critical connections between health and the environment. Nurses are trusted messengers, and I leverage that trust to advocate for change."
Lauren O'Neal, MPH, Medical Student at UT Austin-Dell Medical School "When I was a case manager, I worked with a client with heart failure who repeatedly cycled between the streets and the hospital due to extreme heat exacerbating his condition. It’s a cruel reality: environmental impacts disproportionately harm vulnerable populations. During my medical training, I’ve sought opportunities to care for and advocate for these patients. This includes raising awareness among clinicians about environmental risks and empowering them to counsel patients proactively."
Kimberly Carter, MD, MPP, Assistant Professor, UT Dell Medical School "As an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, I see how pollution, heat, and endocrine disruptors impact my patients across their lifespans—from affecting fetal health to increasing risks for cancers like breast, ovarian, and endometrial. These are conversations I have with my patients every day."
Sanjna Bhatia, BS, BA, Medical Student at UT Southwestern Medical Center "Patients tell me how heat makes it hard to get to appointments or how a lack of greenspace limits their ability to exercise. These moments remind me how deeply health and the environment are connected."
Anusha Govind, MD, Infectious Disease Physician, UT Southwestern Medical Center "Every day, I care for patients suffering the health effects of climate change, particularly extreme heat in North Texas. Hearing their stories fuels my commitment to work even harder to address climate impacts and advocate for solutions."
