January E-News

You Can Help!
As we step into 2025, we’re gearing up for an impactful year of educational and policy work. However, we’re still $1,360 short of our year-end fundraising goal for 2024. Your tax-deductible gift is crucial to sustaining our efforts. With your support, we can:

  • Empower health professionals to advocate for climate action and nuclear safety.
  • Provide environmental health education through webinars and academic courses.
  • Invest in the next generation of health leaders with student chapters and internships.

Together, we can make a lasting difference. Thank you for being part of this journey!

Stand with Communities Against the Harms of LNG

In December, the Biden Administration released its long-awaited analysis of the environmental, economic, and public health impacts of liquified natural gas (LNG) exports. This analysis shows what communities on the ground have been saying for years: LNG export facilities are a clear threat to public health.

Communities like Port Arthur are already bearing the brunt of liquefied natural gas (LNG) development. In August, 30+ health professionals visited the area, witnessing firsthand the industry’s impact on health. By standing in solidarity with frontline communities, we can protect public health, prevent further harm, and drive the transition to clean energy for a healthier, more sustainable future. Submit your comment calling on the Biden Administration to reject the pending LNG permits by January 19.

Sneak Preview: Texas PSR's Spring CME Series

This Spring Texas PSR will provide six new, free continuing education opportunities for clinicians on environmental threats to health. On February 24, at 7 pm Central, Texas PSR Board President Dr. Adelita Cantu kick off the series by looking into how “forever chemicals”/PFAS, used in everything from nonstick cookware, printed receipts and food packaging, have been linked to multiple forms of cancer and other serious medical harms. Link to sign up coming very soon!

Subsequent webinars, offered on Monday evenings from March to June, will include: How to speak to patients about climate change; the mental health impacts of extreme heat; environmental threats to pregnant persons and their unborn children; how microplastics impact health; and the long term impacts of repeated exposure to extreme heat.

We look forward to seeing you virtually at one or more webinars and encourage any practitioners with a particular interest in an environmental health topic to reach out with suggestions for subsequent series.

New Analysis: Channelview Cancer Risk is Likely Far Higher Than EPA Estimates

Researchers from Rice University found that cancer risk from benzene exposure in Channelview could be up to 2,000 times higher than the EPA's current estimate.

They found that the stationary monitor did not record the high emissions that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) field scientists did in 2021 and 2022 that exceeded the stationary monitor's readings 89% of the time. Despite these findings, the TCEQ said it will not address Channelview's benzene levels because readings at the stationary monitor are below the state guideline, one of the weakest in the nation.
