The George Washington Memorial Parkway installed a new water fountain on the Mount Vernon Trail at the rest area near the Old Stone Bridge and Alexandria Ave. The water fountain replaces one installed in 1987 by a previous incarnation of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail. The new fountain is a frostless fountain that can remain on year round and includes a water bottle filling station. The replacement included installation of underground plumbing as well as a new concrete pad.
Congress designated the rest area as the Peter B. Webster III Memorial Area in 2018. Donations made to the National Park Foundation in Webster's memory provided funding for the water fountain. In addition to the fountain replacement, the existing bench, bike rack and interpretive sign will be replaced with the assistance of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail.
Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail will host a volunteer event on 8/31 at the Peter F. Webster III Memorial area to help complete the project.
