Thank you to the organizers, and everyone who was able to attend to show your support on January 3 in Augusta. The line of supporters was larger than many could remember seeing at the State House in recent memory. PSR Maine showed up big for the rally at the Capitol, including many board members and other health provider members. PSR Maine stands in solidarity with the calls for gun reform and safety. TAKE ACTION:

Maine Providers for Gun Safety continues to accept signatures from individual physicians and advanced practice providers on a letter to elected officials, urging our lawmakers to bring us to the table to draft and enact common-sense firearm safety legislation. They currently have 7 state organizations supporting their message! If you haven't already, click here to add your name and join our call to action, and encourage your colleagues and professional associations who haven't yet signed on to join and support their efforts!

Updates from Mainers to End Nuclear Dangers (MEND)

MEND would like to alert you to two dates in January that will highlight both the dangers of nuclear weapons and more importantly the treaty making nuclear weapons illegal. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist will reset the Doomsday Clock on January 23. Given the ongoing Ukraine war and climate crisis, how close will it be to midnight? January 22 will be the third anniversary of the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons coming into force. It is now binding for 68 countries. The treaty bans developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, transferring, possessing, stockpiling, stationing such weapons on their territory, and using and threatening to use nuclear weapons. Both dates offer opportunities for Op-Eds and letters to the editor calling for changes in US nuclear policy to pull us Back from the Brink.

Upcoming Event: Building a World Without Nuclear Weapons: An Urgent Imperative. On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 2-4 pm ET, Pax Christi Massachusetts will present this virtual program addressing the moral dimensions of current nuclear policies and calling for action to change them - featuring Santa Fe (NM) Archbishop John C. Wester; Dr. Ira Helfand, IPPNW/Back from the Brink; and Marie Dennis, Catholic Nonviolence Initiative/Pax Christi International.

Save the Date: Peace Walk Coming to Maine

Veterans For Peace (VFP) will be hosting a Peace Walk starting from the Samantha Smith statue in Augusta on April 27, and traveling to Washington DC. We encourage all PSR Maine members to join Veterans For Peace to kick off this walk. More details about exact timing will be coming soon! In the meantime, please view their website for more information.

PeaceWalk 2024 is an opportunity to expose and discuss the enormous costs and causes of war with our fellow citizens, and to explore ways to nonviolently create a peaceful and truly prosperous society for all. VFP will draw attention to the existential threats to life on our planet–nuclear war and destruction of our environment–and highlight the connections between militarism, the weapons manufacturers that profit from it, and climate change.
