Rally & Sign On to Support Fossil Fuel Divestments

Public pension funds, like MainePERS, are one of the largest financiers of the fossil fuel industry. After a winter of devastating storms and Maine fishermen bringing in their smallest lobster catch since 2009, it is clear that Mainers can’t afford for MainePERS to continue to invest in climate chaos. Tell MainePERS to implement LD 99, the 2021 law directing them to divest from fossil fuels, and protect the future of Mainers here. Learn more here

Divest Maine will also be holding a rally outside MainePERS office building in Augusta on July 11 from 11am-1pm ET. Bring a sign, a friend, and, most importantly, yourself!

Register here.

Take Action: Open Letter to AstraZeneca

Join PSR members from around the country to sign Greater Boston PSR's open letter to AstraZeneca. The letter asks the company to bring Symbicort Turbuhaler to the U.S. market. This dry powder form of Symbicort (budesonide-formoterol) is the formulation used in many of the asthma trials, and is readily available in Canada, the United Kingdom, much of Europe, China and other Asian countries – but not in the U.S.

Pressurized metered dose inhalers (MDIs) are responsible for roughly 4% of our healthcare system’s greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020, the greenhouse gas emissions from metered dose inhaler use in the U.S. was the equivalent of driving 500,000 cars for a year. Switching from pressurized MDIs to dry powder inhalers, when appropriate, can significantly reduce these emissions.

The specific propellant in Symbicort MDI (HFA 227ea) has 3,350 times the global warming potential over 100 years as compared to that of CO2.  It is critical that we, in the U.S., have access to low emission dry powder inhalers like Symbicort Turbuhaler, especially as budesonide-formoterol is an important tool included in global and national asthma management guidelines. Dr. Bernard Lown Honored During Portrait Unveiling

We hope you were able to attend the unveiling of artist Robert Shetterly’s portrait of Lewiston native, founding PSR member, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Bernard Lown. Douglas Rawlings, MEND (Mainers Ending Nuclear Danger) member, and President of Veterans for Peace Maine spoke at the event, honoring the legacy that Dr. Lown left with us all. Dr. Lown’s portrait joins the over 270 portraits that Robert Shetterly has painted as part of the Americans Who Tell the Truth series. Read a full recap of the event here
