Powering Maine Forward

“What do we want? CLEAN ENERGY When do we want it? NOW!”

On May 22, PSR Maine and Alliance members joined many organizations to fill the State House to support clean energy. We lobbied to pass the Energy Fairness Act, and a 100% clean by 2040 electricity standard.

Your health voice is powerful. We delivered our health professional sign-on letter in support of 100% clean energy by 2040. Thank you for supporting this work!

NEW Clean Energy Action!

Join our partners at the Maine Conservation Alliance this Monday, June 9, from 3–5 PM for a rapid-response phone bank to urge Senator Collins to reject a deeply harmful reconciliation bill that'd gut clean energy tax credits, raise energy costs, and fast-track fossil fuel projects.

As we know, Sen. Collins is a key swing vote, and Mainers calling her directly could make all the difference.

Sign Up Now to Help Pass Gun Safety Legislation in 2025

Join us on Tuesday, June 10 in the morning at the State House with partners in the Maine Gun Safety Coalition for an advocacy day. The coalition's legislative priorities have made it to votes in the House and Senate thanks to dozens of gun safety advocates who showed up to the State House for Public Hearings and wrote countless emails to legislators. But we still need to make sure that the bills we have all worked so hard to get this far are passed into law by the House and Senate.

At this point the best way to do this is by showing up in force at the State House while legislators are on their way to and from Session. Lawmakers take note when large groups of people take time out of their day to advocate for a specific issue. Registration and further details can be found here.

Join us on June 14: Nationwide Day of Defiance

What can the health community do to stand up to the unprecedented attacks on health care, climate action, science, medical research, public health, and so much more?

These attacks can’t be addressed in isolation. They must be seen in the context of this administration’s attacks on our democracy. As health workers we can no longer be silent.

We can use our trusted, non-partisan, health voices to speak out to protect our health, the health of our loved ones, and the health of our communities and a life sustaining planet. We can make the connection between climate and health, and why a healthy democracy is fundamental to achieve the policies we need.

No Kings Day rallies on Flag Day, June 14, are a great opportunity to stand up and speak out. There are many rallies happening in Maine. You can find one near you here. Wear your white coat or scrubs and bring a colleague or two.

From Trinity to Today:

Nuclear Weapons and the Way Forward

The Arms Control Association and Win Without War Education Fund invite you to a special event on July 10 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic age. Attendees will learn about the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons use, testing, production, and the power of citizen movements that have changed the course of nuclear history. The panel will highlight how we can reduce the risks of nuclear weapons and arms racing today.

All details can be found on the invitation below. You can register here.

The Power of Physicians in Dangerous Times

From the New England Journal of Medicine: "The current crisis in the United States is bigger than politics, and it deeply affects the health and lives of our patients and communities. Now is the time for physicians to harness their power and act."

Teaching Patients Climate Resilience, from My Green Doctor

New research shows that healthcare professionals have a unique opportunity to teach their patients about individual and community climate resilience. My Green Doctor’s latest newsletter explores the benefits of waiting room teaching resources for patients, how your practice can take the Green Practice Pledge, and why healthcare professionals are trusted messengers about climate resilience: Patient Waiting Room Teaching Resources.

My Green Doctor is a free money-saving membership benefit provided through Physicians for Social Responsibility. Practice managers, doctors, and nurses use the “Meeting-by-Meeting Guide” to learn how to adopt environmental sustainability, save resources, address the health threats of climate change, and help create healthier communities.

The MGD team is ready to accelerate your environmental sustainability goals—ask them how: member.services@mygreendoctor.org. They’ll explain how adding just five minutes of My Green Doctor to each regular clinic or practice staff meeting will add up to big savings. They welcome everyone in your practice to register as Partner Society members at https://www.MyGreenDoctor.org or at www.MyGreenDoctor.es (sí, en español). Use the discount code MGDPSR when you register to get free access to My Green Doctor.
