Mainers Commemorate 80th Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bombings with Film Screening and Community Dialogue

PORTLAND, ME — On the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Mainers Ending Nuclear Dangers (MEND) will host a public evening of remembrance, featuring the award-winning documentary Silent Fallout. The event will take place on Wednesday, August 6, at 7:00 PM at the Portland Friends Meeting House, located at 1837 Forest Avenue, Portland, ME.

This gathering will bring together community members to honor the lives lost and forever changed by U.S. nuclear weapons. Attendees will explore the historical and ongoing impact of nuclear weapons and amplify the urgent call for global disarmament.

The program will center around a screening of Silent Fallout, a 2023 documentary investigating the deadly legacy of radioactive fallout in the U.S. from more than 100 above-ground nuclear tests. The film illustrates the lasting health and environmental consequences still felt today. A discussion and several calls to action will follow the screening.

Our core issues include:

· The medical consequences and mitigation of climate change and air pollution
· The medical and humanitarian reasons nuclear weapons threaten our existence, and all
countries must endorse the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
· The medical evidence for the need to identify and reduce chemicals in and exposure to

everyday products that are toxic to humans and the environment.
