Critical decisions are moving quickly at both the state and federal levels that will directly impact public health, access to care, our environment, and more. Now more than ever, lawmakers need to hear from our health professional community. Read on for actions to take now!

Your Voice is Needed! Federal Reconciliation Bill

This week, we await language from the Senate on their version of the reconciliation bill, with many health care-related pieces expected by early next week, if not sooner.

This moment requires continued public pressure and advocacy on our part to inform these negotiations, raise concerns about what is in the bill, and remind Senators — and Representatives too — that they have the power to pull back on this massive, rushed piece of legislation. Send an email to Senator Collins here!

Some of the most egregious highlights of this bill would:

  • Force 15 million people off of Medicaid and could disrupt coverage for 68 million people on Medicare
  • Increase Pentagon spending by $150 billion including $1.5 billion for the Sentinel program
  • Repeal clean energy tax credits, raising electricity prices by $400 per year over the next decade for the average household
  • Cut off SNAP benefits for nearly 11 million people
  • Allow federal officials to ignore judges and court orders

Simply put, if this bill is passed, people will die, whether it be from a lack of healthcare access, a climate change-fueled natural disaster, exposure to radioactive contamination from nuclear weapons production, or inability to pay for food or housing. We must not continue to enrich billionaires and fund immoral weapons that should never be used while taking invaluable resources away from the most vulnerable among us.

The Latest on Environmental Priorities from Augusta

It’s hard to believe, but we’re quickly approaching the end of this year’s legislative session. You'll hear from us again with action alerts on additional priority bills, but for now, here's our update from the State House + actions you can take TODAY.

Clean Transportation (LD 1138)
LD 1138 incorporates climate change considerations into transportation planning. Investing in cleaner, more affordable transportation options like reliable transit and safer streets will protect our health, reduce climate pollution, and support local economic growth. ACTION: Contact your member of the House and tell them to vote YES on clean transportation. The latest fact sheet can be viewed here.

Energy Fairness Act (LD 1949)

LD 1949, is about building an energy system that prioritizes Maine families, not energy executives. This bill will establish year-round disconnection protections for people with medical conditions or disabilities, who rely on electricity. We need to speak up one more time and tell lawmakers to protect vulnerable Mainers from disconnection. ACTION: Email your lawmakers: Pass the Energy Fairness Act!

A Maine Climate Superfund (LD 1870)
The Environment and Natural Resources Committee voted on May 14 to carry over LD 1870 to the second regular session that begins in January of 2026. The Maine Climate Superfund Act aims to hold the largest fossil fuel companies accountable for the climate crisis and get them to pay their fair share toward Maine’s recovery and resilience. Learn more by reading the EPC factsheet on the Maine Climate Superfund Act.
