Doomsday Clock Reset TODAY
Maine Physicians Call for Immediate Action
Augusta, Maine— The Doomsday Clock was set 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been in its 75-year history. This reflects on the escalating nuclear threats and a worsening climate crisis as primary factors. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, stewards of the Doomsday Clock, emphasized in their announcement that the Clock could be turned back, but blindly continuing on the current path is a form of madness.
The Maine Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR Maine) cautions that all
indicators point to the world moving closer to global catastrophe and calls on the United States to act quickly. “There is no adequate medical response to the use of nuclear weapons. The United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is an answer providing a hopeful solution.” said Dr. Doug Dransfield, PSR Maine’s MEND Co-Chair, “The treaty is binding on 73 countries and has been signed by 98. The United States should be leading this effort but is instead not participating.”
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has a 75-year+ history of covering existential threats, such as nuclear risks, climate change, and disruptive technology. Every year the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board updates the Doomsday Clock to reflect the state of those threats.

PSR Maine, a Physicians for Social Responsibility statewide chapter, is a group of over 1000
healthcare professionals and citizen advocates. The organization exists to prevent public
health risks by changing public opinion and policy. Our work, informed by scientific and
medical research, is the foundation and defining feature of our advocacy and educational
programming.
Our core issues include:
· The medical consequences and mitigation of climate change and air pollution
· The medical and humanitarian reasons nuclear weapons threaten our existence, and all
countries must endorse the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
· The medical evidence for the need to identify and reduce chemicals in and exposure to
everyday products that are toxic to humans and the environment.
