Take Action: No Money for Nuclear Weapons

From September 16 – 22, 2024 activists from around the world will join together in a week of action against nuclear weapons spending. This week will highlight ICAN’s annual report on nuclear weapons spending, Surge: 2023 Global nuclear weapons spending

Every second, the world spends $2,898 on nuclear weapons. That’s $173,880 per minute, and $10,432,800 per hour. How could one hour of spending on nuclear weapons affect your community? Your patients? Your life? Let’s prescribe something better for our communities. Get the facts here, and help spread the word here.

New Federal Appliance Standards Will Reduce Pollution, Improve Health, and Save Consumers, Businesses Money

Maine continues to be a leader in the clean transition and expansion of heat pumps. The health improvements of transitioning home appliances away from burning heating oil and fossil fuels is well documented. Now a new analysis by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP) and Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) of appliance efficiency standards set by the Biden administration calculate that the move will save households money on utility bills each year. Maine businesses will also save more than $10 million annually which can also improve the health of workers, reduce climate change, and potentially reduce costs for goods and services.

“These updated standards will save consumers money and reduce air pollution for years to come, just by the use of more efficient appliances. It’s a clear win for Americans’ wallets,” said Abe Scarr, energy and utilities program director for PIRG. “For households and businesses across the country, the prospect of sustained annual utility bill savings and cleaner air is welcome news.”

Doug Rawlings Portrait Unveiling at Common Ground Fair

Robert Shetterly will be unveiling his 275th Americans Who Tell The Truth portrait – of Vietnam veteran/peace activist/poet Doug Rawlings – at the 2024 Common Ground Fair in Unity, Maine. Doug is a member of Mainers for Ending Nuclear Dangers, and the President of Veterans for Peace Maine.

The unveiling will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, in the Social and Political Action tent. (on the east side of the fair grounds, behind the MOFGA tent; view Fair map here). Rawlings and Shetterly will share stories, art and poetry with the audience.

New Resource: Silent Contamination Timeline

National PSR has created a timeline highlighting the impact of nuclear testing and mining on Native American communities across the United States. Silent Contamination is an interactive timeline that explores Native American involvement in the nuclear industry and the consequences that have followed.

This timeline highlights the historical and ongoing impact of these risks on Native American communities. It delves into struggles for justice and recognition, as well as the cultural and environmental devastation caused by the U.S. nuclear industry. Through personal stories, historical data, and health reports, Silent Contamination aims to shed light on the profound and lasting effects of the nuclear industry on Native American lands and peoples. View the timeline here.

How Green is Your Travel?

Most of us love to travel. But travel’s “dark side" is its environmental cost:  the carbon dioxide and other pollutants created from the fossil fuels burned for travel by air, land, or sea. The Green Travel Guide from the PSR’s My Green Doctor offers ways to calculate and reduce your travel carbon footprint.

My Green Doctor is a free money-saving membership benefit available to the PSR Maine Chapter through Physicians for Social Responsibility National. Members use the “Meeting-by-Meeting Guide” to learn how to adopt environmental sustainability, save resources, address the health threats of climate change, and help create healthier communities. This requires adding just five minutes to each regular clinic or practice staff meeting, making small changes at each meeting that really add up. Watch the “Three Minute Video” that explains how easy it is to incorporate My Green Doctor into your practice. We welcome everyone in your practice to register as Partner Society members at https://www.MyGreenDoctor.org or at www.MyGreenDoctor.es (si, en espanol). Use the discount code MGDPSR when you register to get free access to My Green Doctor and save money!
