Dear Jane,

As we approach 2025—and more specifically the pivotal years of 2025-2029—we must acknowledge the challenges ahead. The next several years will require us to face an uphill battle in the national arena as we advocate for health-protective policies aligned with our shared goals.

Despite this, I remain optimistic. The checks and balances in our Constitution provide safeguards that can help limit the damage caused by an administration that denies the reality of climate change, prioritizes industry over public health, and alienates our allies. I also believe there is sane leadership in Congress—on both sides of the aisle—committed to doing what is best for our nation. It’s essential that we do not remain silent but instead seize every opportunity to make our voices heard and point the way forward for America.

We have work to do—but together, we can make a difference. As of today, we’re 80% of the way to our year-end fundraising goal. If you have given already, Thank YOU! If you haven't yet, can you help us close the gap?
Here in Maine, we are fortunate to operate in a political environment where disagreements are resolved through healthy debate and compromise. Even so, pushback on climate policies and public health measures—particularly those addressing toxic exposures—remains fierce. Maine’s legislators need to hear from us, their constituents, about the policies we value and the future we want to build.

Over my 38 years as a pediatrician, I was privileged to provide care to thousands of children. During that time, I witnessed both the remarkable health and resilience of Maine’s children and the unsettling risks to their health caused by environmental toxics and climate change. As health professionals, our voices continue to command respect, and our efforts truly can create a healthier, more sustainable world for the next generation.

Wishing you a Happy New Year and looking forward to making progress together in 2025.

Warm regards,
Syd Sewall, MD
Board President
