We talk a lot about launching dreams at Shake-A-Leg. This is a place where people have experiences they never thought possible. It’s a place where anyone can come and let the salted breeze across the water lift them to a better state of mind. It’s a place where new ideas and innovations are happening every day.
This is a place where dreams are launched.
2023 might just be the year of dreams for our future leaders. That’s what it feels like at Shake-A-Leg, where we closed off 2022 with 300 youth racing in the Orange Bowl Regatta. We rolled that right into a beautiful Bay Day at Shake A Leg where we invited you all, and many braved the chill to explore the sea under sail and power for FREE. This was followed by the 69F regatta, where young adults and teens from around the world flew foil boats through the waters of Biscayne Bay toward their Olympic dreams. Closely followed by the annual Shake an Erg competition where 400 youth from across South Florida pushed themselves beyond their limits in a regional rowing competition. The Bacardi Winter Series 2 Regatta launched boats of several classes and all ages aboard through beautiful weather in the last weekend of the month. Finally, Summer Camp Registration soon opens, and youth, teen mentors, volunteers and teachers can find their dreams, create friendships and make bonds in Miami’s inclusive water sport playground.

TUUCI Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta
|
On December 27 – 30, youth raced on the waters of Biscayne Bay in the largest regatta for kids ages 8-18, The TUUCI Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. One such sailor, Eleanor Moore, a Green Fleet sailor from Annapolis Yacht Club suffered an injury at the Atlantic Coast Championship in October. Her perseverance was acknowledged by leaders of the Orange Bowl, who awarded her the 2022 Magnus Liljedahl Sportsmanship Award. Our Shake-A-Leg community knows a lot about perseverance and provides a safe place for you to find hope and happiness. We hope you’ll find the courage and commitment to launch one of your dreams this year.

Youth competitors and coaches with their cheering crowds in the hangar for the Shake an Erg event on January 21, 2023
|
January 21 hosted over 400 rowers who competed in various classes on "erg" (ergometer)s. If you're new to rowing, an erg is an indoor rowing machine that provides no-impact, full-body strength and cardio exercise for able and disabled bodies. Parents and friends cheered on competitors who raced against each other and their own scores, many of them marking new personal bests.
The event was organized by Jose and Elaine Segrera, parents of two rowing sons. Jose said, "It is always a pleasure to get the South Florida rowing community together and afford our youth rowers the opportunity to have fun and compete. These events bring together such a diverse crowd, from 10-year-olds just starting out in the competitive realm to former US Olympic rowers. We know the inspiration is real as several of our South Florida teen rowers will be attending prestigious universities in the fall such as Brown, Georgetown and Columbia to continue their studies and rowing careers."
The event was made possible by donations like the one from Withers Worldwide and proceeds of the event were donated to Shake-A-Leg to help maintain existing programs and facilities.

One such program that will benefit from the event, Seaworthy Transitions, carried a special role prior to the event. Members of the vocational program used onsite machinery to make and engrave the awards in the traditional shape of swords handed out to winners of the Shake an Erg competition.
|
SPOTLIGHT: Jared & Seaworthy Transitions
|
This year marks Jared's third at Shake-A-Leg in the Seaworthy Transitional Program. With the guidance of the program leader, Jared made the traditional trophies awarded during the annual Shake an Erg event this month, the kind of thing he can continue to do as a job after graduation.
The machinery used in the boat maintenance and repair workshop where the transitional program attendees train, is advanced technical equipment found in many marina repair shops along the coast. Students, like Jared, learn the skills for important marine jobs.
Students in the program learn soft skills like socialization in addition to trade skills like hospitality and marine repair. They divide their time learning and exploring Biscayne Bay. All the while, they are making friends and building confidence... because in the end, this is what it's all about.
