During School Outings

High School students join us for weekly outings

A group of students from Felix Varela Senior High School joins Shake-A-Leg Miami for regular outings. These students have a disability and hope to gain confidence and comfort in social interactions while participating in activities learning about water safety, boating, sailing, kayaking, ecology of the bay and more. Together with their chaperones, the students travel from their Kendall based school in order to gain confidence, community and friendships. Opportunities like this one are available to all schools and groups, with scholarships available where applicable. Find out how to get your group involved.

Seaworthy Transitions Vocational Program

Seaworthy Transition Program officially started up again with several new students joining the crew of our marine vocational program. If you followed along from last time, you know that one of our returning students, Jared, has been helping make some the materials we use for community engagements right here at Shake A Leg. Now, with a group of new students eager to learn, once quiet Jared, has found the confidence to teach the newcomers what he’s learned!

"It all started for me at Shake-A-Leg Miami. I believe I am where I am today because of Shake-A-Leg Miami."

Kevin Seelig, volunteer to Franchise Owner Freedom Boat Club

UMPT Program

University of Miami  Physical Therapy students sail to a camp out in Boca Chida

Physical therapy students from UM finished an annual 5-week immersion sailing program with Shake-A-Leg.  Over 5 weeks, the students are taught by the demographic they one day hope to teach. In the final weekend, UMPT students, together with their SALM instructors embark on a 3-hour sail to the northern most key, Boca Chida for an overnight camping excursion where the tables are turned, and the students support the instructors through a full 24-hour day's needs. The reversal of roles allows for the students to go beyond what they learn in the classroom and know their patient from a new perspective, creating lifelong friendships.
