A single mother of four (and grandmother of four), Shikina returned to school for Business Management and Human Resources. With her award, she moved forward in her education and began mentoring other young mothers—sharing the same message of hope that carried her through.

🧠 Tennille Jackson (2025)
Tennille found her calling in what many might overlook—cleaning. What began as a way to support herself became a source of healing and empowerment. Now, she hires women facing similar challenges, offering flexible jobs and a path forward. The Spirit Award is helping her expand her business and her impact.
💪 Tawana Thompson (2025)
After overcoming the traumas of childhood abuse and incarceration, Tawana is rebuilding her life through education and advocacy. She’s pursuing a degree in Human Services—and plans to create a nonprofit that provides housing and resources for formerly incarcerated women.
👩🏽⚕️ Ashley Johnson (2025)
A veteran and single mom, Ashley faced job loss and homelessness after moving to protect her daughter from bullying. Now rebuilding her life, she’s beginning her journey toward a nursing degree. With support from the Spirit Award, Ashley is turning adversity into purpose—preparing to care for others with compassion drawn from her own lived experience.

Bettie Brand Mothers' Empowerment Fund Mission: The Bettie Brand Fund Mothers' Empowerment Fund gives stipends to “provide women in need with a hand up, not a hand out, so they may live with dignity and independence.” Women chosen to receive stipends from the Bettie Brand Fund must agree to “pay it forward” in whatever way they can. |
