Help Us Fight Hunger In Polk County
|
September is Hunger Action Month (HAM) and Outreach wants to raise awareness about food insecurity and encourage our community to join the fight against hunger.
Here in Polk County, 1 in 6 people and 1 in 5 children struggle with food insecurity. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing information about hunger in our community while highlighting ways everyone can play a part in addressing it.
Our HAM activities includes weekly challenges, hunger facts, volunteer opportunities and simple ways to get involved. We’ll also be taking Hunger Action Month out into the community with four banners rotating through locations around Polk County. Each banner shares a different fact about our Food Pantry, the food and resources available and the Polk County community members we serve.
|
Whether you participate in one of our September challenges, share information with others, volunteer, attend an Outreach event or make a contribution, there are many ways to take action throughout Hunger Action Month.

A new school year means another year of Backpack Snacks, and we’re excited to welcome students back for another year of the program! Following the pattern we saw last school year, participation is continuing to climb as the year gets underway. Our first delivery included 347 bags, and by our third delivery, that number has already grown to 375 bags for Polk County students.
Each week, volunteers fill Backpack Snacks using one of four rotating menus. Bags are delivered to Polk County schools every Thursday and distributed to participating students on Friday, providing food they can take home for the weekend.
A special thank you to everyone who supports Backpack Snacks throughout the school year. From those who donate food for the program to the volunteers who pack bags each week and the drivers who deliver them to our schools, your continued support helps keep Backpack Snacks moving week after week.
