New to the Kitchen!

It’s great when an existing local food business moves their production to the NCFW kitchen. They are able to cut their costs and increase their efficiency, as well as deepen their ties within the local food system. This month saw the start of several local food businesses out of NCFW’s space!

One of them, Lily and Sparrow Bakery, run by Anna Johnson, is an allergen-free bakery operation that Anna has run out of her home but is now so popular that she is looking to expand to our commercial facility and more sales outlets. From Anna: “I started baking allergy friendly goodies in 2012 when we learned our youngest had multiple food allergies. I had to learn to bake gluten, dairy, soy, egg and shellfish free. During that time, I have learned a lot about what makes gluten free goodies taste great. My hope is always that people can’t tell the goodies I make are gluten free—or that they taste so good, even people without allergies want to eat it.” More to come soon! 🍪

Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board Survey

In the last legislative session, the Oregon Legislature approved $10 million to support natural climate solutions in partnership with Tribes and environmental justice communities, with $2.25 million of this funding going to OWEB to be distributed through OWEB grant programs. OWEB is excited to administer these funds in a way that expands their partner community and supports a wide range of possible climate projects—that's where they hope you come in!

OWEB is committed to using these funds to support ecosystem health and human well-being, with a focus on carbon reduction and storage. Examples of projects might include cultural burns, workforce development to reduce wildfire risk, or forest cover expansion in low-income urban communities. OWEB would also like to hear what climate solutions you need funding for and how OWEB can support your efforts with funding for technical assistance or implementation.

Here is a link to a survey that is designed to gather input from organizations that might be interested in this funding, the types of projects you’d be interested in implementing, barriers to doing so, and anything else you think OWEB should consider as OWEB sets up this funding opportunity. The survey will be open through Friday, October 4, 2024.
