North Coast Food Web is conducting a short annual survey to gather feedback from our producers, shoppers, volunteers, event attendees, and donors. The information we collect will inform our future programming and help us report to our funders.

Watching multiple, deeply destructive hurricanes make landfall in the southeast the last couple of weeks has a lot of us shaken. I’m sure I’m not the only person with friends, family and professional counterparts in the region, giving each of us a unique window into what’s happening there on the ground.

 

As the Executive Director of the Food Web, watching from afar has brought into sharp focus for me the importance of our work here in a world with an increasingly unpredictable climate...

SNAP is back!

đŸ„• Friendly reminder that we are once again able to accept SNAP payments at the North Coast Online Farmers Market! If you are interested in applying for SNAP benefits, visit oregonhunger.org/apply-for-snap for detailed instructions! 

 

Once enrolled in SNAP you automatically qualify for Double Up Food Bucks. Anytime that you use your SNAP benefit to purchase fresh fruits or vegetables through the North Coast Online Farmers Market, you will automatically receive a 50% discount on all fruits and vegetables, up to $20 per week!

Bootcamp Begins

Our Food & Beverage Entrepreneur’s Bootcamp, in partnership with Clatsop Small Business Development Center and Astoria Co+op has begun! ✹

 

Our first cohort includes several exciting new businesses that are poised to get up and running here in Astoria. We’ll be highlighting these businesses one by one over the next few months, so stay tuned and get hungry (and thirsty)! 

 

Upcoming Events

Producer Presentation

Join us for a presentation on beekeeping and harvesting honey! Led by local beekeeper, Julie Tennis, owner of Bee Haven Apiaries.

 

🍯 The presentation will be followed by a sampling of different batches of honey and there will also be honey for sale after the tasting. Cash, check, and Venmo accepted. All ages are encouraged and welcome! (Sampling not recommended for our small friends under 1.) Coffee, tea and light refreshments will also be provided.

Community Cooking Workshops

🍂 Autumn brings the return of some of our favorite Community Cooking Workshops!

 

November 3rd is our monthly OSU Master Food Preservers class, this one focusing on preserving foods for holiday gift-giving! 🎁

 

November 6th we also have the return of Sarah Woods of Gathered Bakeshop for a class on Hand Pies & Pie Dough. đŸ„§

OSU Online Survey

 🐔 Do you have chickens on your farm? Do you welcome visitors to your farm?

 

If so, please complete Oregon State University’s online survey at: https://beav.es/cAL

 

The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and your answers will be kept strictly confidential. The information from the survey will help OSU understand biosecurity habits and develop practices that can reduce risks for visitors, poultry, and farmworkers. If you have questions about the survey, please contact Joy Waite-Cusic at Joy.Waite-Cusic@oregonstate.edu

 

OSU is also looking for farms with poultry to participate in on-farm sampling for Salmonella and Campylobacter. Your participation and farm’s pathogen results will be kept confidential to the research team. Upcoming Water Access Community Meeting

Oregon Water Resources Department (OWRD) has recently stepped up enforcement on commercial irrigation use of domestic exempt wells. Join Friends of Family Farmers at their upcoming virtual Community Water Meeting on October 23rd at 6pm to learn about water law, the current situation with OWRD and get info about next steps in the 2025 Legislative Session. This meeting will go into detail on the current water law and exemptions, give options and resources for farmers navigating the current system and end with a discussion of potential policy options.
