August 2026

We kicked off the new school year with a Back-to-School BBQ filled with food, fun and connection! Youth and their siblings headed home ready for the classroom with new backpacks generously donated by doTERRA, and families created their own first-aid kits to tuck inside.

Of course, no celebration is complete without a little sugar. Our Friends took turns making cotton candy, with plenty of youth requesting the biggest cotton candy possible!

Beyond the fun, the BBQ offered something just as important: an easygoing opportunity for Friends to connect with caregivers. One of our Friends, Christian, shared that he especially values the event as a chance to check in with families, hear what they need, and talk about how Friends – Utah can best support youth and caregivers as they settle back into school-year routines.

Thanks to our supportive community and staff, Friends – Utah youth and families are starting the school year feeling supported, connected, and ready for what's ahead!

Building Strong Readers, One Book at a Time

Strong literacy skills are foundational to success in school and beyond, which is why Friends – Utah is intentional about creating opportunities big and small for youth to read, explore and build a love of learning.

Just in time for back-to-school, a youth we’ll call Maya visited the Kearns Library with her Friend and signed up for her very first, very own library card. She proudly chose a purple card (her favorite color!), received a free book and book bag from the kind and welcoming librarian, and explored the library through a dinosaur scavenger hunt.

Experiences like this are an important part of our commitment to literacy: making books accessible, helping youth see reading as something they can enjoy, and building habits that support learning all year long.

With consistent encouragement from their Friends, our youth are strengthening the skills — and confidence — they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

Thank You for Investing in Our Youth

We are grateful to The Kahlert Foundation for investing in our youth and their futures. With a focus on strengthening communities through youth programs, education, health care and human services, they share our belief in creating opportunities for young people to thrive.

We are also deeply thankful for the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation, whose commitment to empowering people and communities aligns closely with our mission. Their match of our spring campaign earlier this year and their donation of backpacks this fall are just two of the many ways they support youth and families.

Thank you to The Kahlert Foundation, doTerra Healing Hands Foundation, and all of our partners for believing in the potential of Utah's youth and helping us keep our promise: 12+ years, no matter what. Your investment keeps our mission moving forward and helps make generational change possible, one relationship at a time.
