JULY 2026 NEWSLETTER

FROM OUR DIRECTOR

July was a month of reflection. As our nation celebrated America's 250th Anniversary, many of us took time to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities that define our country. At the same time, our work at MCVRC serves as a daily reminder that justice is not simply an ideal; it is a responsibility. Every day, we have the privilege of helping crime victims exercise their rights, find their voices, and navigate a system that can often feel overwhelming.

July also included the United Nations' World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30. This observance reminds us that human trafficking is not only a global issue but one that affects communities here in Maryland. Survivors of trafficking often face significant physical, emotional, and legal challenges, making access to compassionate, trauma-informed services essential. We remain committed to ensuring that every survivor is treated with dignity, respect, and the opportunity to pursue justice.

None of this work happens in isolation. We are incredibly grateful to the law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, courts, legislators, service providers, community organizations, and many other partners who work alongside us every day. Their collaboration strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive legal services, advocacy, and support to victims across Maryland.

As we look toward the months ahead, I am continually inspired by the dedication of our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, donors, and community partners. Thank you for standing with us as we continue our mission to ensure that victims of crime receive justice and are treated with dignity and compassion through comprehensive victims' rights and services.

BURIAL PLOTS AVAILABLE
We have been generously gifted burial plots at Lorraine Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, and Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

These meaningful gifts will help ensure crime victims and their families are treated with peace, care, and dignity during some of life’s most difficult moments. *Please note these are only available to crime victims*

If you or someone you know could benefit from this support, please feel free to reach out to Jennifer Abell, Chief of Finance & Operations, at Jabell@mdcrimevictims.org 💜

JOURNEY TO JUSTICE

MCVRC Employee of the Month Award "Journey to Justice"-- a monthly recognition to celebrate team members who go above and beyond in their role. This initiative is designed to foster a culture of appreciation, collaboration, and excellence across all departments.

Congratulations to our July awardee: Amy Hobaugh 🎉

Amy was nominated by Alondra P., our June Journey to Justice recipient, for being the true definition of someone who goes above and beyond. This person is the one everyone turns to when they need an answer, a solution, or simply someone they can count on. No task is too big or too small!

FREE Support Counseling for Crime Victims

Our monthly homicide survivors' support group meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, August 13th.

It is held in a hybrid format, both virtually and in person at the Upper Marlboro Office (1001 Prince George’s Blvd, Suite 750, Upper Marlboro, MD).

The Support Group is a safe place for friends and family members of victims of homicide to meet, discuss, and support each other. All participants need to call us and request a referral to the homicide support group only (if you prefer individual counseling, we offer that too).

Spanish Speaking Support Group will be held the first Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will take place Wednesday, August 5th. These are held virtually only.

Individual Counseling is also available for individuals that prefer one on one sessions. Services are available virtually and in person. It may take 1-2 weeks to be seen with an in- person counselor depending on client’s needs and location. Virtual counseling is available within a week.

You can reach MCVRC at 877-VICTIM1 for scheduling and more information.

#WHYWEFIGHT

Each day we find motivation to continue to be a voice for those who need one.

These are a small fraction of the faces that motivate us. Their names and photos are taken from our Ceremony of Remembrance event slideshow. Each Wednesday, we share a life taken on that date and we celebrate them to remind us that crime is not victimless. These people are real, and their families miss them. These faces are "why we fight."

This work is only possible because of supporters like you. If you’re able, please consider making a donation to help us continue showing up for victims across Maryland.
