Reconstructing Judaism

Reconstructing Judaism and Reparations

Reconstructing Judaism, a branch Jewish faith community, has a mission to cultivate, provoke, and inspire a deeply rooted, boldly relevant, and co-created Judaism that provides individuals and communities with tools to lead lives of meaning and joy. Over the past year, congregations across the US have been engaged in exploring the intersection of faith, history, race, and reparations, including a special Shabbat focused on reparations. This initiative provided an opportunity to re-engage in the deep reckoning with racial harm and accountability that is at the heart of the Reconstructionist Reparations Resolution in January 2023. The goal of the Reparations Shabbat weekend was to facilitate both ongoing congregational study and action by identifying ways to join local reparations efforts. You can find some of the outputs over the year, including curriculum and sermon starters, at the Reconstructing Judaism website.

Reparations In The News

Where Banks Don’t Lend - RepGen believes that homeownership is key to erasing the wealth gap between Black and white Americans, but the barrier to homeownership is still high for Black Americans. This report by WBEZ Chicago illustrates how home loans in Chicago disproportionately go to White homebuyers.

The Timeline: Black Homeownership - BET's The Timeline series breaks down the biggest issues shaping Black lives today by connecting the dots between history and the present. Their latest is a look at Black homeownership and the racial wealth gap under a government hostile to equity.

Black lawmakers renew push to assist California descendants of enslaved Americans - On Feb. 20, the California Legislative Black Caucus on a package of 15 bills for reparations for the descendants of African Americans who were enslaved in the United States. These proposals include preferences for public university admissions and financial assistance for first-time home buyers. Caucus members say this will be a multiyear effort to repair the generational harms and discrimination suffered by the descendants of the enslaved in California.

Congressional Black Caucus reintroduces bill to create reparations commission - Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) have announced the reintroduction of H.R. 40, legislation to establish a federal commission to examine the lasting legacy of slavery and develop reparations proposals for African American descendants of enslaved people. The bill is a powerful counterweight to the harmful actions taken by Donald Trump and a call to action for America to address the systemic oppression of Black people throughout its history. Watch the news conference here.

Racism Isn’t the Only Cause of the Racial Wealth Gap - An in-depth look at capitalism’s role in perpetuating racial inequality in The New Republic by Eric Herschthal, author of The Science of Abolition: How Slaveholders Became the Enemies of Progress.

Acts of Reparations Documentary

Acts of Reparations, a documentary film directed by Selina Lewis Davidson and Macky Alston, is making the rounds on the film festival circuit. The film “follows two friends as they explore what reparations means to them. Selina, who is Black, and Macky, who is white, have been friends and filmmaking partners for 25 years. Genealogy nerds, they travel south to reclaim and reckon with their roots.” There is also an option to host a screening for community groups.
