ED Talks - Thoughts from the Executive Director

"Ladies & Gentleman, Act II  is about to begin!"

While reflecting on the disappointing outcome of the MCPAC ballot measure, I can't help but see a corollary between our efforts and a typical two act play that might be written about our journey.

In such a play, Act I typically sets the stage for a central conflict or goal, with characters working tirelessly to achieve their objective. Similarly in our case, years of dedicated effort have gone into creating a design, securing funding, planning, and rallying community support. We have canvassed, hosted events, and garnered endorsements, just as a play's characters strive toward a seemingly achievable resolution.

However, Act I  of a play often ends with a major obstacle. the ballot measure represents the culmination of our Act I—the moment of highest tension and the fear that our hopes may be dashed. Our journey now faces a set-back which could halt our progress to the disadvantage of the community. In both the play and our work, this loss at the end of Act I forces a re-evaluation of strategy and priorities. That's where we have been since the ballot measure. In a way we have been in a brief but thoughtful intermission.

So now the lights have flashed, and the chimes have rung calling us back in for Act II.

Act II of a typical play often explores resilience and the fight for a new beginning. Our Act II opens with a chance to regroup, learn from mistakes, and persist. It's not about pushing harder now but about learning from the outcome and coming back with a clearer, more refined approach. We must confront the reasons behind the defeat: Was the message wrong, or did we fail to connect with the right community members? Does the design meet our needs and provide for growth with-out being costly or ambitious? Do we need to overcome cynicism and fatigue among our supporters? Like characters in a play who must evolve in the face of adversity, we must now face new questions and obstacles, so we can analyze and refine our approach.

Through-out Act II our journey will involve re-assessment, growth, and the realization that our goal remains achievable—though the path seems harder and requires more patience. Rather than giving up, we will draw from the lessons learned, reenergize our supporters, and work harder to bring the community together. We will seek out new and renewed alliances, a more compelling narrative, and an evolved vision for a project the community can fully support. Much like the characters in a play who find a new, unexpected way forward, our resilience and adaptability will lead to our ultimate success.

When the curtain falls, just you watch-our community "audience" won't be able to refrain from a standing ovation!
